Diving at Sale

On the island of Sal, the rocky terrain looks the same as it did millions of years ago: massive rocks, grottoes, canyons, caves and reefs, which perfectly complement the beauty of coral “landscapes”. In numerous caves and grottoes one can see eels, lobsters and parrot fish. There is no Egyptian beauty and abundance on Cape Verde, but large specimens and predatory fish are much more common here. Not a rare meter long sea snipe (flutoryl), sea turtle up to one meter in diameter, three-meter slope, ball fish, flocks of dolphins. Near the island there are three wrecks at depths from 9 to 12 m.

The average depth of the dive here is from 6 to 30 meters. The best time for diving is from April to November, when almost all sites are accessible. There are about 32 dive sites around Sal Island.
Buracona Cave
A large cave with a diameter of about 10 m, which can be reached through an exciting tunnel – an absolutely black pipe. As you approach the cave, the impression is as if you are going up to the neck of a bottle of sparkling water. The cave has an arch about 10 m high and an exit created by nature in volcanic rocks, which serves as a resting place for divers. The coastal zone of the Buracons abounds in unexplored caves and grottoes, and there is a nearly 25-meter pool above sea level nearby. An ideal place for short dives and a picnic. Maximum depth: 22.5 m, cave entrance at a depth of 18 m, total tunnel length – 49.5 m.

Reef ponta do farol
In total, there are three dive sites in the Ponta do Farol area. At a depth of 40 m there is a wide entrance to the cave, inhabited by wide yellowtails and barracudas, numerous needle crabs. Visibility – from 15 to 40 m. Maximum depth: 40.5 m.

Reef tchuklasta
The magnificent ocean reef, which extends from 15 to 36 m in depth and is covered with bright yellow polyps. Here you can see spectacular underwater scenes of tuna hunting, meet 120-centimeter green turtles, wide yellowtails, parrot fish, fluoratoles, hummingbirds, barracudas, stingrays and schools of “surgeons”. In addition, this reef is a great dive site for divers of all categories. Maximum depth: 36 m.

Blue room
The blue room is located just 182 meters from the shore and is a jagged wall with many holes and reefs. There are grouper and moray, yellowtail, barracuda and other deep-sea fish. The vaulted walls of the reef are covered with bright yellow polyps. Nearby, on the surface are salt lakes in the crater of the volcano Pedra de Lume, where you can go on an excursion after a dive. Maximum depth: 30.4 m.

Palmiera (Pesqueiro Ti Culao)
The 300 m long dive site is located off the western rocky coast of the island of Sal, north of Porto de Palmeira. In the local underwater rocks there are many small caves (9-12 m) and black basalt fjords. This is an ideal place for diving from the shore, where you can see: parrot fish and flute fish, and at a depth of about 18 meters – a needle-crab. The site is suitable for diving at any time of the year. Depth: 23 m, distance from the shore – not less than 12 m.

Wreck santo antao
Dry cargo ship Santo Antao sank on January 8, 1966, as a result of a collision with an underwater reef. The ship’s length is 40 m, and for some time it remained in relatively “good” condition, but a strong storm in 1993 severely damaged the hull. Here we have huge flocks of fishes for ourselves: trigger-fish, hedgehog fish, flute fish, glass-eyes, eel, barracuda, parrot fish. This site is well suited for both beginners and experienced divers. Maximum depth: 12 m.

Wreck demfior
The Danish merchant ship Demfior crashed on the rocks off the east coast of the island of Sal shortly after World War II. The place of the shipwreck is not well understood, but it is known that the ship was carrying cargo of cocoa beans. Relatively well preserved two massive ship machines. The ship was chosen by colorful small fish, sea clams and hundreds of needle-crabs. Maximum depth: 12 m.
